Planning to catch up on some good audiobooks this summer? Beginning Tuesday, Audible is rolling out a new rewards program that awards bonuses and merit badges based on listening habits or for referring others. Rewards range from discounts unlocked through daily listening to a free credit after a year of membership. Members need to sign up for the free Audible Rewards through the Audible app or website or via Amazon.com.

Other perks include a free credit after members spend three credits and a $15 reward for referring three new customers to Audible. Each referred customer also receives a $5 credit.

The company also unveiled listening challenges, including badges for listening to three or more titles in four months or for listening to the entire seven-book Harry Potter series.

Audible makes audiobook titles available for sale a la carte or as part of a subscription, including the $15 Premium Plus, which includes a monthly download members can keep forever. In March, Audible announced a cheaper $9 subscription, which includes one title a month, but only for the length of the subscription.

Amazon bought Audible in 2008, and the service now boasts over a million audiobooks in its catalog. One of Audible's main competitors is now Spotify, which offers up to 15 hours of audiobooks a month. Amazon's own Prime Music Unlimited also includes one Audible audiobook listen every month.

Audible members should see a link to join the new rewards program when they log in to the app.
