  • We need a Marshall Plan to tackle Americas housing crisis
    www.foxnews.com
Homeownership has long been part of the American dream, but that dream has been deferred.Households in their 30s have an ownership rate of just 42% more than 20 points lower that the national average. The median age of all home buyers is a record-breaking 59, and the age of a first-time buyer is 40 up from 29 in 1981.THE TOP 3 REASONS HOUSING HAS BECOME SO UNAFFORDABLE IN THE US MARKET AND IT'S NOT WHAT YOU THINKAs a solution, the Trump administration is floating a 50-year mortgage.Though I disagree with that specific idea, I am heartened that they are brainstorming ways to tackle the problem. We need a Marshall Plan for housing, a collection of broad initiatives to make homes more affordable and put the dream back on track. The federal government can use its bully pulpit to get changes to red tape and regulations that are holding back building, and encourage policies that would increase housing and decrease costs. To start, the White House and Fannie Mae should instead promote shorter, 20-year mortgages. As Ed Pinto of the American Enterprise Institute has argued, a 20-year loan can be paid off "when the 30-year-term loan leaves most homeowners saddled with another decade or more of mortgage payments, the cash flow freed up from a paid-off shorter-term loan is available to fund a childs post- secondary-education needs and later turbocharge ones own retirement."The 20-year loan could be incentivized with a first-time buyer tax credit. This would be especially important today when the vast majority of taxpayers no longer itemize their tax returns which means they cannot avail themselves of the deduction for mortgage interest. That deduction always favored wealthy buyers of high-end homes anyway so a targeted tax credit would help those who actually need it far more. Its time, as well, for the Trump White House to roll back one of the key initiatives of Elizabeth Warrens pet project, the Consumer Protection Financial Agency. The CPFC has pressured banks to limit mortgages to "plain vanilla" mortgages, premised on its rules or what consumers can afford.TRUMP'S 50-YEAR MORTGAGE MAY BURDEN AMERICANS WITH MORE DEBT, EXPERTS SAYAdjustable rate loans and other "mortgage products" can be right for some buyers who should have a choice of how much risk they want to take in exchange for getting into the home market.Even a low down payment might be hard to come up with, however, for those who cant take advantage of generous in-laws.Those without rich parents might turn to a "housing saving account" akin to the popular health savings accounts initiated by George W. Bush and which hold some $59 billion and are sheltered from taxation. The new housing accounts should be tailored only for down payments, however not long-term maintenance and other homeowner needs.Buyers also are allowed today to take out $10,000 from their 401(k) penalty-free to go to a downpayment on a home.Perhaps its time to raise that ceiling.Of course, it goes almost without saying that even the most creative financing and incentives will fall short of addressing our housing needs without the most important problem: Supply. There are many reasons why there arent enough starter homes.Regulation in many cities makes construction difficult.More retiring Boomers own second homes.Banks have increasingly bought real estate as an investment and drive up prices.Low turnover is another reason Gen X buyers have so much trouble breaking into the market.During COVID, mortgage rates hit record lows and many refinanced. These owners have a strong incentive not to trade a 3% mortgage for a new home and a much-higher rate.Another key reason: more and more of us are living in small households or even alone. The Census Bureau reports that, between 2019 and 2021, the number of households increased by more than 2 million a year. That means we not only need more housing but more types of housing many smaller units especially, rather than the two-acre, one house lots common in so many suburbs. Here is where the limits of Washingtons hard power is reached.Much of US housing policy is set at the hyper-local level, by planning boards and zoning boards.Thats why outgoing Mayor Eric Adams deserves so much credit for his "City of Yes" rezoning in New York, which will permit safe basement apartments and "accessory dwelling units" in parts of the city.Accessory units or granny flats" can also be the means for older couples to sell the homes to younger households and downsize. As part of a federal push, though, the Marshall Plan for Housing could encourage these same changes nationwide: Changing zoning to allow more housing; or taking undeveloped state land and providing tax incentives to build on them. Its the 18,000 municipalities across the country that are often standing in the way of what might be called naturally occurring affordable housing small homes on small lots, like those of the original Levittown, where houses where just 750 square feet of living space.Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner should urge localities to permit private, unsubsidized, small homes and apartment buildings, or what AEIs Pinto terms "light-touch density."Its far more likely to gain local approval than the subsidized, low-income housing Democrats have long favored, starting with the public housing the socialist Zohran Mamdani wants to revive.CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINIONPrivate building is also less costly; new housing units in California subsidized through the low income housing tax credit can cost upwards of $800,000 per units, a bonanza for developers but not many tenants.Building costs for any housing, however, will inevitably go up as a result of another Trump policy: his 10% tariff on plentiful Canadian lumber and timber products and a 25% tariff on kitchen cabinets and furniture. The de facto taxes are causing what the National Association of Home Builders calls "headwinds" holding back new construction. As a builder himself, he should rethink these tariffs.Homeownership is a virtuous conspiracy making the nation better.Owners are more likely to maintain neighborhoods than renters, more likely to improve schools and services by getting involved in local government the essence of American federalism. The decline in home ownership is a problem that must be addressed federally, and locally. But the Trump administration can take the lead, with tax breaks and the encouragement of construction. The president can bring the dream alive again.CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM HOWARD HUSOCK

"We have documented 180 criminal incidents involving Kiccdoe members. This includes aggravated assaults, robberies, burglaries, shootings, and drug offenses. That's just within the city of Arlington."Jones said he hopes the arrests send a message and will help keep the community safe."Our city is safer with these suspects off the street, and I hope our community can rest a little easier tonight knowing that. I also hope that we have proven to them that we will not tolerate violence in our community, and we're going to do everything in our power to stop it," he said.Arlington police and the FBI said their joint operation will continue.

  • Liberal comedian tells Stacey Abrams 'civility is overrated' against MAGA right
    www.foxnews.com
Samantha Bee told Stacey Abrams on Thursday that civility is "worthless" and "overrated" during what they described as an "authoritarian" regime. The former "Full Frontal" host joined the former Georgia gubernatorial candidate on Abrams' podcast "Assembly Required" where they discussed the role of political comedy during the second Trump administration."I think it's what you've done so deftly through your comedy is that you, I think, agree with Roxane Gay who wrote a piece back in September where she said that the MAGA right wants the left to always be civil as if there's this perfect, polite way to debate humanity," Abrams said. "She calls it a fantasy and argues that when people's rights and lives are on the line, we don't have to play nice."COMEDIAN SAMANTHA BEE LOSES IT OVER LEAKED SUPREME COURT DRAFT OPINION ON ROE V. WADE: 'PEOPLE ... WILL DIE'Abrams asked Bee what role she thought civility played in political comedy and discourse. Bee suggested civility shouldn't be a factor."It's always people telling you to just, like, be quiet and be nice and, you know, compromise yourself," Bee said. "If you're compromising everything and the people with the power and control are giving up nothing, then I just don't see...I think that civility feels quite worthless in those."EX-LATE-NIGHT HOST ADMITS COLBERT'S SHOW IS GETTING CANCELED BECAUSE IT'S 'HEMORRHAGING' VIEWERS, MONEYShe continued, "So sometimes you do just need to stand up and scream. If not, you know, whether it has an effect on the outcome or not, at least everyone who feels the same way that you do is achieving some type of catharsis. Maybe it's motivating in some way. I think civility is pretty overrated."Bee quickly clarified that she was not advocating for political violence and was only referring to "discourse."During the podcast, Bee added the situation for late-night comedians was "really scary" in light of Stephen Colbert's cancellation and Jimmy Kimmel's brief suspension. She called out wealthy people for failing to stand up to President Donald Trump despite having the financial means to do so.CLICK HERE FOR MORE COVERAGE OF MEDIA AND CULTURE"What is the point of having like f--- you money if you never say 'f--- you' with your money?" Bee said. "Like all the people with f--- you money should be standing up right now and directly saying 'f--- you' across every industry. And they are actually not doing that because it appears that no amount of money is f--- you money now for a lot of people."Bee's show, "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee," premiered in 2016 and ran until 2022. She was known for having controversial rants, including a 2018 segment where she called Ivanka Trump, Trump's daughter, a "feckless c---."

  • Transgender Air Force members sue Trump admin after losing retirement benefits
    www.foxnews.com
Seventeen transgender Air Force members discharged under the Trump administrations transgender ban are suing the federal government for revoking their pensions and benefits after their forced early retirement. The transgender members, who served between 15 years and 18 years in the Air Force, are asking for retirement benefits that had previously been offered to them. The lawsuit, filed on Monday, comes after the Air Force said in August that transgender service members who have served between 15 and 18 years would not be offered the option to retire early and apply for benefits, a reversal of an earlier decision. The service members impacted by the new policy now face a loss of up to $2 million owed for their service over the course of their lifetimes, on top of the loss of health insurance benefits, according to GLAD Law, one of the advocacy groups that helped bring the lawsuit.FEDERAL JUDGE STRIKES DOWN BIDEN-ERA TRANSGENDER REGULATIONSA staff attorney with the group, Michael Haley, said the revocation of the early retirement benefits was part of "the general cruelty in attacking transgender people," adding that several of the plaintiffs had received orders allowing their retirements and that some had already started the process of leaving the military."These are folks who are going to move on with their lives, have received the OK to do so, and then have that taken away from them once again," Haley said.A master sergeant in the Air Force with 15 years of service, including a deployment to Afghanistan, joined the lawsuit after having early retirement rejected, saying "the military taught me to lead and fight, not retreat."PENTAGON STOPPING GENDER TRANSITION TREATMENT FOR TRANSGENDER TROOPS"Stripping away my retirement sends the message that those values only apply on the battlefield, not when a service member needs them most," Logan Ireland told The Associated Press. This is just the latest legal challenge against the administrations policies that seek to force transgender troops out of the military. In May, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the ban on transgender troops to move forward while legal challenges proceed.President Donald Trump and Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth have targeted transgender service members as part of their efforts to root out diversity, equity and inclusion in the military. On top of revoking retirement benefits, the Air Force moved in August to deny transgender members the opportunity to argue before a board of their peers for the right to continue serving. The Pentagon also recently revealed a similar version of that policy across the military. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

  • DNC staffers ruthlessly mocked for fuming over remote work reversal: 'Get yourselves together'
    www.foxnews.com
Democratic National Committee employees were mercilessly mocked this week after news came out that staffers were very unhappy with a recent directive from DNC Chairman Ken Martin end to remote work for employees who will now be required to show up to the office five days a week.Leadership of the union representing DNC employees put out a statement following news of the new directive, describing it as "callous." Reports from those on the staff-wide call also described an immediate flurry of thumbs-down emojis and other signs of anger upon news of the new requirement."It was shocking to see the DNC chair disregard staffs valid concerns on todays team call," they wrote. "D.N.C. staff worked extremely hard to support historic wins for Democrats up and down the ballot last Tuesday, and this change feels especially callous considering the current economic conditions created by the Trump administration." Martin reportedly told employees that if they don't like the new policy, they should go find a job elsewhere. And Martin wasn't the only Democrat who had some harsh and pointed words for the Democratic Party staffers. Neera Tanden, former President Joe Biden's domestic policy advisor, had a similar message for DNC staffers, suggesting there were many eager folks waiting in line who would likely be more than willing to go into the office.PROGRESSIVE DEMOCRATS TURN ON PARTY LEADERSHIP AFTER GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN ENDS WITHOUT HEALTHCARE GUARANTEES"If you think democracy is on the line working in the office is not a big ask," Tanden wrote in a post on X. "And there are plenty of other people willing to step up. Get yourselves together people."A left-wing group, the Center for New Liberalism, echoed the view that the staffers "should look elsewhere" if working from home is a "must-have.""When you accept a job on a campaign, or with an org like the DNC, DCCC, etc, your single purpose is to win the election. It is a demanding job that requires long hours & sacrifices," the group wrote on X. "The other part of this is that I suspect [work from home] staff are probably losing opportunities for themselves by not being in the office. Campaigns require a lot of personal sacrifice, but the people who are good at their job and work to make themselves noticed in the office usually tend to go on to do big things!"One Florida-based Democratic strategist, Steve Schale, who led Barack Obama's statewide efforts in Florida in 2008 and returned to help his campaign in 2012, said the DNC should implement a "requirement" to ensure those who want to work at the DNC really have what it takes. "There should be a requirement that to work at the DNC that youve done at least two cycles on an actual battleground campaign, where terms like flex hours & hybrid work dont exist," Schale wrote on X.6 HOUSE DEMOCRATS EXPLAIN BREAKING WITH PARTY TO END SHUTDOWNMeanwhile, Republicans did not spare the opportunity to slam Democratic Party staffers as well. "You can't make this up -- the DNC union is pissed that the Chairman is calling staff back into the office 5 days a week," former Trump White House press secretary, Sean Spicer, said after learning of the anger. GOP strategist, Matt Gorman, quipped that the image of DNC staffers logging onto a Zoom call in their pajamas amid all the chaos of Biden's reelection "is hilarious.""The best part is that they still get two full months before they actually have to get out of bed 5 days week," GOP National Press Secretary Kiersten Pels said. "Is this a political committee or a daycare?"Martin reportedly told his employees that the work-from-home policy the DNC implemented during COVID was never meant to be permanent, describing it as a "Band-Aid" that has long needed to be ripped off. He did say that remote work would still be allowed on a case-by-case basis, however. The staffer's union said it is considering all options in terms of challenging the measure. The group previously ratified a collective bargaining agreement with the DNC over the summer that "reaffirms its commitment to making hybrid work available," but also includes language that allows for a full return to in-person working as long as there is a 60-day notice period, according to the New York Times. Earlier this year, the Congressional Progressive Staff Association sent a letter to top House and Senate leaders proposing a rotating 32-hour work week for congressional staffers, arguing it would be a more "sustainable approach to work on a national level."The proposal was widely mocked, however."Why not be bold and ask for a 0-hour workweek?" quipped Rep. Ritchie Torres, D-N.Y., at the time. "I wonder how blue-collar Americans would feel about white-collar workers demanding a 32-hour workweek."

  • California's largest migrant detention center accused of horrific conditions in federal lawsuit
    www.foxnews.com
A new federal lawsuit alleges horrifying conditions at California's largest migrant detention facility, including sewage bubbles rising from shower drains and detainees being forced to use dirty bandages to wrap open sores. The American Civil Liberties Union is among the groups representing seven men at a previously mothballed prison in the desert in California City. The lawsuit, filed on Wednesday, alleges inadequate medical care for serious issues like cancer, life-threatening heart conditions and diabetes, as well as neglect of people with disabilities and forced isolation. The complaint also claims dirty housing units, inadequate food and water, very cold temperatures, restrictions on family visits and delays in access to lawyers. Detainees are additionally reporting encroachment on their freedom of religion, including confiscation of prayer mats, head coverings even holy texts.OREGON DEMOCRATS OUTRAGED OVER REPORTED ICE FACILITY PLANS NEAR PORTLAND"ICE is playing with peoples lives, and they treat people like theyre trash, like theyre nothing," one of the plaintiffs, Sokhean Keo, said in a statement on Thursday. "Some of the people Im detained with dont even have soap they take showers without soap and theyre losing weight because they dont have enough to eat."Severe understaffing and crumbling infrastructure were also reported at the facility, where men were told when it first opened to clean out dirty cells and housing units full of garbage and "toilets with fecal matter still in them" without being given cleaning supplies. The complaint argues that the detention center has worse conditions than a prison for criminals. Detainees are held in their cells for much of the day with nothing to keep them occupied, "resulting in a widespread sense of hopelessness, desperation and, in some cases, self-harm and suicidal ideation."DHS PLANS 'CORNHUSKER CLINK' DETENTION CENTER AS TRUMP EXPANDS IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT"No human being, immigrant or not, should be subjected to these horrendous conditions," another plaintiff, Gustavo Guevara, said in a statement. "I hope society becomes aware of the abuse, neglect, indifference, and the overall unjust treatment we are being subjected to, and does not turn a blind eye. Its not right that because were immigrants they feel they can treat us this way."Fernando Gomez Ruiz, a diabetic, was eating at a food truck outside a Home Depot when he was detained by ICE last month. He said he has been denied regular doses of insulin, "leading to elevated blood sugar levels and a large, oozing ulcer on the bottom of his foot" that he covers with soiled bandages because clean wraps are not provided at the facility, according to the lawsuit, which stresses that he fears he will lose his foot. The prison was shut down in 2023, but ICE contracted to reopen the facility as a migrant detention center with a bed capacity of 2,560. Officials began sending migrants to the facility starting in late August."The treatment of the people held in the California City facility is yet another example of ICEs utter disregard for the rights and dignity of people in its custody," Kyle Virgien, senior staff attorney at the ACLUs National Prison Project, said in a statement. "Access to necessities like food, basic medical care, and counsel arent mere suggestions they are constitutionally protected rights that all people in detention are entitled to."It currently holds about 800 people, and it is expected to reach full capacity early next year, as the Trump administration continues to target migrant communities as part of the president's mass deportation agenda.Department of Homeland Security Spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin denied the allegations, purporting that ICE "has higher detention standards" than most prisons."All detainees are provided with 3 meals a day, clean water, clothing, bedding, showers, and toiletries, and have access to phones to communicate with their family members and lawyers. Certified dieticians evaluate meals," she said in a statement. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

  • Patriots handle AFC East rival Jets at home behind TreVeyon Henderson's 3-touchdown night
    www.foxnews.com
The New England Patriots continue to roll, handling their AFC East rival New York Jets, 27-14, on "Thursday Night Football."New England extended its lengthy win streak to eight games, improving to 9-2 on the season. Meanwhile, the Jets brief win streak, after starting the season 0-7, has come to a close.Heading into this game, the Patriots were expected to dominate the Jets. While the scoreboard didnt say so in the end, their rookie running back certainly provided the fireworks.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMTreVeyon Henderson, who had a breakout game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week with 147 rushing yards and two long touchdown runs, added three more touchdowns to his first-year stat line in this victory. He was the only Patriots player to find the end zone, starting with the teams 13-play, 69-yard drive that ended with his entire offensive line pushing him over the goal line to tie the game at seven apiece. On the Patriots next drive, Henderson rushed in from seven yards out to give the Patriots a 14-7 lead to end the first half.PATRIOTS DRAW PRAISE WITH STORMY UNIFORM DEBUT AGAINST JETSNew England started to pull away after quarterback Drake Maye, an MVP hopeful who had yet another great performance, put together chunk completions to set up an eventual touchdown pass to Henderson, who found himself wide open in the end zone.Henderson finished the game with 62 rushing yards on 19 carries, while hauling in five catches for 31 yards.Meanwhile, Justin Fields and the Jets offense struggled in yet another outing despite a great 14-play opening drive that ended with the quarterback rushing it in himself.Fields was coming off a rough game against the Cleveland Browns, though the Jets were able to win thanks to two special teams scores. He threw for only 54 yards with a 60.4 quarterback rating.Fields was 15-of-26 for 116 yards in this game with a touchdown pass on a broken play to John Metchie III that made it 21-14 in the third quarter. But there were more negative moments than positive for the Jets, including a fumble lost on a low snap in the fourth quarter while the Jets were down just a touchdown. The Patriots were able to run the fourth-quarter clock out, and give the home crowd what they were hoping for in Mike Vrabels first year as a head coach a winning season. There is still more work to do, but nine wins put the Patriots above .500.Looking more into the box score, Maye was an efficient 25-of-34 for 281 yards with his one touchdown pass to Henderson. Stefon Diggs also led the way with nine catches for 105 yards, a game high, while Mack Hollins and Hunter Henry both caught four passes. For the Jets, Metchie was the leading receiver with 45 yards on three grabs, while Breece Hall had 58 rushing yards on 14 carries. Fields had 67 yards on 11 runs.Follow Fox News Digitalssports coverage on Xand subscribe tothe Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
